  1. My university is going to switch from Novell to Google apps for our e-mail needs. Frankly it makes sense when one considers the kind of integrated online services (and space, which I think has something to do with our switch) that Google provides. I’m looking forward to it!

  3. It is awesome – the part I’m torn on is going around IT… but only when IT is being reasonable :) heh

I think I’d be concerned about the security of the data as well as how the usage could affect records management/retention schedules (if the institution has them). If the records are important to documenting the day-to-day operations of the office, what kind of control will the office have over the information? How can this data be collected as part of an RM program, if necessary? What kind of control is the department ceding to a third party, and how will security of sensitive information be maintained?

I for one would love to be able to share my email and calendar between school, home, family & friends. The ability to do so could save me potentially hours each week, not require me to “forward” email from one to the other so I’ll have needed information accessible regardless of where I am working.

Going against IT isn’t something I feel comfortable with. I’m hoping that as our library science deptartment and other SBISD employees use The 23 Things IT will become comfortable enough to loosen the “strings”.
