WorldCat Identities

November 13th, 2007

After CIL last year I briefly mentioned that WorldCat was going to have a new service (WorldCat Identities). Well, this just in from the Outgoing blog:

Over the weekend WorldCat Identities went into production. Personal authors now have a link to their WorldCat Identity page under the Details tab.

As Thom Hickey mentions, it’s still a bit messy because it’s in a WorldCat frame – like our OPACs are when we search WorldCat, but it’s still a pretty neat addition. Here’s the example that Thom gave.

Apparently there is a short URL that you can use to access Identities (via Outgoing) [/update]

Facinating. As someone who is both an author and someone who shares a name with an author it’s interesting to see the places that this braks and also where it works. I’ve had my books collocated wihth those of the other jessamyn west I think I just expect it now.

Hmm – do you both have authorized forms of your name in the LOC authority files? I’m wondering how OCLC will handle things like that in the future.

It is a short URL that leads to a browse list (a.k.a. a disambiguation page). I note, though, that the links to individual records off that browse list are much friendlier (e.g. http://worldcat.org/identities/lccn-n79-32879 than the ones structured to look like OpenURL queries. I’ve got a comment in Thom’s moderation queue asking him about that…
