No more Netscape
AOL has announced that yesterday was the last day they would support Netscape Navigator – “the first mass market graphical Webrowser”:
At one time, Netscape was the de facto Internet browser, but due to some nefariousness on the part of Microsoft, Internet Explorer took over. Now, the spiritual successor to Netscape, Firefox, is chipping away at IE’s market dominance.
I can clearly remember my transition. Our school supported Netscape and so that was the first browser I used. It was only after I got my first computer that I started using IE – just like Matt at CrunchGear said – it was because I was inexperienced and it came with my computer.
I can’t say I’m sad to see Netscape go – it caused me all kinds of trouble when I was designing web pages – but I mention this because of its historical nature.
