[...] Nicole Engard (in an unrelated post) argues that the problem isn’t social networking sites - it’s ignorance. Yes yes yes. MySpace has 90 million users or so - some of them WILL be bad people. Just as some of the people living in your town will be bad people. The secret is learning how to deal with, or avoid, those people. It’s about education. [...]

Techcrunch (http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/07/27/us-house-resolution-targeting-myspace-web20-passes-410-15/) has pointed out that US House Resolution 5319, the Deleting Online Predators Act (DOPA), was passed by a 410 to 15 vote. This is just amazing. Wy are they doing it? It seems to say that kids can't self regulate themselves against 'predators'. Well, shouldn't adults and parents be teaching there children how to use social software, and what the pitfalls are. If kids are barred from using myspace and barred from it, they'll get around it. Banning is not the answer. Education is a far better way of doing it.
