Libraries = obsolete??

October 5th, 2006

I finally had some time to catch up on my podcast listening (still have 2 and half to listen to) and was pointed by Marv to this article in the Lawrence Journal-World. The article entitled Libraries are limited, obsolete is written by a self-proclaimed educator – who obviously missed an important bit of education himself. Mark Hirschey a professor at the University of Kansas – School of Business says:

Libraries are inefficient. Like me, kids seek fast, convenient access to up-to-date information. That's available on the Internet. In this new information age, libraries are an obsolete place to store and disseminate information. Rather than speed access to reliable, up-to-date information, libraries provide only remote, slow and inconvenient access to limited and often outdated information.

He goes on to say:

Multiple information providers on the Internet make fact checking easy and reliable. No single person, such as a librarian, can or should be relied upon to verify accuracy.

I would like to point Mr. Hirschey to the Johns Hopkins tragedy (something I’ve written about before – and am discussing in one of my classes right now). Then I’d ask him if he’d like to participate – no – if he’d like his kids to participate in a medical study in a world where doctors only have the resources on the Internet to check their facts & research??

I am so flustered that I have hit delete and backspace about 50 times already – I don’t know what to say to this man – or people like him – except that we as librarians need to get out there and educate the public!! I have a journal entry that I wrote for one of classes this week that I will share with you all once the week is over (I want to wait for everyone to have submitted their assignments without being influenced by what I had to say) in which I state this very thing!!!

New Toy

October 4th, 2006
HP Ipaq 4355

I bought a new toy on ebay over the weekend. I am not the excited (cause it’s a new toy) owner of an HP Ipaq 4355. What’s so neat about this gadget? Well it’s a Pocket PC with WiFi – something I haven’t had on a Pocket PC before. It also has a handy little keyboard. It also allows me to read my lectures & handouts while on the train on the way to work without having to print them all out!

I have only one problem – and it’s not the fault of the toy – it’s the fault of me for not reading the description carefully. I have an a/g router at home and apparently my new Pocket PC needs a b router!! Guess it’s time to go out shopping for more goodies ;)

Back to School w/ the Class of Web 2.0

October 4th, 2006

Neat title – not mine ;) Solution Watch has a great thread titled Back to School with the Class of Web 2.0.

With the increase of teachers using blogs and wikis, and students networking and utilizing online tools, the demand for easier and more efficient ways of learning is on the rise. To me, the growing interest for web-based learning is amazing, which brought me to thinking; what if I were to consolodate some of the helpful online products and services that can help students, teachers and administrators alike? Well, I convinced myself. The following is a compilation of Web 2.0 products that I've personally researched and tested.

Very neat – make sure you check it out – even if you’re not a student like me. I’ll be keeping an eye out for Part 2 and will share once I find it.

Second Life Frustrations

October 4th, 2006

Most of you have probably heard about the security problems at Second Life – but have you had problems getting back in? I have. When I was prompted to reset my password the form was unable to load my secret question. This left 2 options open to me. 1 – I could list 3 friends (first & last names) – yeah right. 2 – I could enter how much Linden charged me most recently – well that total as $0 and it didn’t work!! So I ended up locked out of my account. I emailed only to get a phone number – I called only to get voicemail – I left a message only to get NOTHING!!

I have contemplated starting a new account – but my avatar has all kinds of neat things and they were all organized nicely – I’d hate to lose all of that. So if you’re wondering where Talia Nicholas has been – she’s at home fuming and trying to figure out how to get back into her account :(
