My new keyboard

January 16th, 2006

Today I got a new keyboard. I’ve been using the same ergonomic keyboard for ages now – since college – so when I got some money for Christmas I decided to splurge!

I bought the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 – and it is so pretty!

I just unpacked it and needed to write something to try it out :) So I thought I’d let you all know about it. The keys are still a bit tight and a few of them are in different places – but for the most part I am very pleased.

There are 2 very handy resources I need to tell you about. One I’ve known about for a while and one I just found today.

Ever get annoyed with those automated systems where you have to hit a hundred different numbers before you get a person? Well this IVR Cheat Sheet from Paul English will solve all of your problems. It includes the shortcuts to getting a person on the phone at over 250 companies!!

Now – what if you don’t know the 800 number to get in touch with the company? Well you can use the Hard to Find 800 Numbers guide. Top hard to find numbers include: Amazon, Microsoft and Yahoo.

Get organized

December 21st, 2005

Steven Cohen frequently mentions how unorganized he is – well maybe this nifty tool would help – ReminderFeed.

ReminderFeed is a FREE reminder service tool that works through your feed reader. Simply fill out the form below, then add the RSS Link to your feed reader. It’s that simple!

What I’d like to see is a way to add multiple reminders easily – right now it’s just one reminder – or a reminder for something that re-occurs everyday.

Overreact Much?

December 21st, 2005

I just read over on Leslie Burger’s blog about a – what I consider – silly fiasco over a simple holiday card. A NJ librarian sent decided to use the ALA “Seasons Readings” holiday cards this year. She sent her first batch of cards to the township committe, library donors and local politicians, then as Burger says “all hell broke loose.”

Township Committeeman Gerard P. Scharfenberger said the card illustrates a larger problem, an assault on religion in general and Christmas in particular.

“This is outrageous,” Scharfenberger said. “It’s insulting and it’s dangerous to let this kind of thing go on.”

. . .

The cards have a red background with “Seasons Readings” printed in large white block letters. Also on the card, printed in white, are a number of Christmas greetings in different languages – including Chinese, French, Spanish and German – and a greeting for Kwanzaa and Hanukkah.

At Monday’s Township Committee meeting, Scharfenberger blasted the omission of “Merry Christmas” in English.

He said when he saw that, “I hit the ceiling.”

Scharfenberger lamented a “really nefarious effort by a small, well-funded group to purge religion from the public agenda. Nazi Germany, Russia, that’s how they started.”

You’ve got to be kidding me! I read this article out loud to my husband while we ate breakfast this morning – yes I had my laptop at the breakfast table :) – and it started a conversation on political correctness.

I have to agree that if the card is wishing people a happy Kwanzaa and Hanukkah then it should include Christmas – but do you hear the people who celebrate those holidays throwing a fit because most store windows, billboards, cards, news broadcasts, commercials, etc are wishing people happy Christmas?

Read the entire article at Burger’s blog or here.

Not a Librarian

December 15th, 2005

I’ve been a bit quiet the last couple days, this isn’t because I’m not keeping up with library news it’s because I’m finding things a little out of my league. As I mention in my tag line I am a Library Web Manager – not a Librarian – and sometimes I feel out of my element when reading about library tools, services, associations – when they aren’t related directly to my area of expertice – the web.

So what am I doing about it? Well, I have paperwork sitting at home with information about a masters degree in library science – the question remains where do I find the time and money to take this step … and do I really want to go back to school at this point in the game?

Anyway, just a personal note from me. Hopefully I’ll have something news related to post soon …

New Home

December 11th, 2005

Welcome to our new home. I don’t plan on ever moving again.

I don’t have time now to design my own theme, so I downloaded one from a great site: alexking.org.

I’m off to catch up on my reading so I can post some more for you. Please update your bookmarks & feed readers.

Snow Days

December 9th, 2005

Are an excuse to get busy … well for people like me. Today was a snow day so I decided to try and get my new domain set up with WordPress so that I can host my own blog. The url is web2learning.net but I’m still trying to transfer stuff over and I haven’t decided on a design yet. So if I don’t post as much as normal, it’s because I’m trying to get everything over there and the more I post here the more I have to move :)

So what do you call this? This isn’t life trumping blogging – it’s blogging trumping blogging … woah … something to think about :)

No more days off

December 5th, 2005

Geeze! I took one day off from monitoring my Bloglines subscriptions and now I have over 550 new posts to read … I guess that means no more days off for me. Watch here for a bunch of updates – unless it was 550 boring posts.

Zero!

November 18th, 2005

Oh My Goodness! It can be done, it took me 2 weeks but I have subscribed & unsubscribed to hundreds of blogs/news sources and I'm not down to 161 feeds and ZERO new posts … of course that will change in a minute or so, but I just thought I'd share … back to work.
