Are you backing up?

There was an article on TechCrunch today about a massive mistake made by Flickr:

IT architect and Flickr user Mirco Wilhelm couldn’t log on to his 5-year old account yesterday, and when he asked the Flickr team about this issue they flat out told him they had accidentally flushed his entire account, and the 4,000 photos that were in it, straight down the drain.

Apparently Wilhelm reported a Flickr user with an account that held ‘obviously stolen material’ to the company last weekend, but a staff member erroneously incinerated his account instead of the culprit’s.

Now those who know me, know that I post all my pictures on Flickr but you may not know that I do keep a copy of all of my pictures on my computer and on an external hard drive. Basically I have my pictures in three places so that if something like this happens I’ll still have my pictures. So my question to you is – are you backing up your data?

I got a recommendation for a Flickr backup application called Bulkr. It works on Windows, Mac and Linux so it’s an option for all of us. I also have a lot of other Flickr applications bookmarked on my Delicious account (which I also back up) if you’re interested in trying other options.

What you choose doesn’t matter, as long as you’re backing up the content you keep online because accidents happen!

Two Favorite Photo Tools in One

I’m so excited. While I’ve been away on vacation, my two favorite photo sites have formed a partnership. Flickr & Snapfish now work well together. I used to have to upload my pics to both places when I wanted to create gifts or order prints – now I can just upload my pics to Flickr and then import them to Snapfish …

– or simply use the new Print & Create tool on Flickr!

My gift creation this holiday season is going to be so much easier than in the past – thank you Flickr & Snapfish!!

Tagging People in Flickr

Woo Hoo!! Just what Flickr has been misssing – the ability to tag people who appear in the photos! I was looking at pictures from Internet Librarian and a change in Flickr popped out at me – there is now a small link on the right hand side of the page that lets you list people who are in the picture you’re viewing! Check it out:

Flickr Galleries

First, I am obviously behind on my blog reading – but I just learned from Cnet that Flickr has announced a new feature – Galleries.

There’s a long list of features that we’ve wanted to develop for our members. Giving our members a way to celebrate the creativity of their fellow members has always been high on that list. Today, we’re thrilled to launch our newest feature: galleries.

For whatever you find interesting, fascinating, or mind-blowing on Flickr, galleries are a way to curate up to 18 public photos or videos of your fellow members into one place around a theme, an idea or just because.

Flickr v. Picassa

As many of you know – I am a die-hard Flickr fan with a Pro account and a camera by my side at all times! I did however give Picassa a try when they came out with a Mac version and did like it – but I have too much invested in Flickr to make any switches – not that I want to. Anyway, if you’re not using a photo sharing site yet, this post by David Israel compares the two from his point of view and then by others in the comments.

My only problem with Flickr is that I have no way to download my pictures to my computer with all of the added metadata (geo-tagging, tags, titles, description) on my Mac. If you know of something I don’t – let me in on the secret cause I would love to be able to download my pics!!!

Flickr Improved Contacts

Yesterday Flickr improved their contact lists:

Today we’re releasing changes to Flickr’s contact list page, that make finding, managing, and generally noodling-around with your contacts an easier and more enjoyable experience. You can now also now search for people within your contacts.

You should check it out if you have a lot of contacts like I do – it’s much easier to navigate!!

No more anonymous Flickr tags

Have you ever tagged someone else’s photo on Flickr? I have, but usually only when I’m in it. I guess anonymous tagging happens more than we realize and so Flickr has now added the ability to see who added the tag:

Flickr has quietly made a big change to its tagging system, which from now on will show who added a tag to a photo or video. As Flickr’s Community Manager Heather Champ notes, this information was previously available through Flickr’s API, but wouldn’t show up on Flickr’s photo pages. With the new system you simply hover over a tag and you’ll get a tool tip that shows you the username of the person who added the tag.

Flickr & Locations

I’ve been looking through a lot of photos on Flickr lately and have noticed that not many people are putting their pictures on the map. Why is this? I love adding my traveling (never pictures taken at home) pictures on the map. This way there is always a location tag on my photos. I also think it’s handy for conference goers. If someone is going to CIL next year, they can see my pictures from the location and get a feel for what it was like … of course they could search by the cil2008 tag, but what about those just interested in the area?

So, I guess I’m posting for 2 reasons. 1) are you using the Flickr mapping feature? 2) if not, why?

Flickr & Last.fm

Oh neat!! I was playing with Last.fm today and saw that I could link my photos from concert to the concert page on Last.fm. So I put a machine tag on my pictures and all of the sudden they were linked right to Last.fm:

How cool is that? I didn’t know that you could do that!!

Flickr Color Scheme Search

When teaching Flickr, I’ve shown people the neat Flickr Color Picker tool from Krazydad. Today I found a search that goes one step further. In addition to letting you search for just one color, Multicolr Search Labs lets you find pictures which match a color scheme.

Comparing Photosharing Sites

No one is going to get me to stop using Flickr – in fact moving off of Flickr would probably be nearly impossible for me with over 5,500 photos in my account. That said, you may be interested in this comparison from DownloadSquad of several photo sharing sites.

Flickr on Photoshop Express

Since finding Photoshop Express, I haven’t used it … Why not? Because I upload hundreds of photos to Flickr each month and I don’t want to have to upload them to other places too. Now, I have a reason to re-visit Photoshop Express – Flickr support!

At the conference call in March, we asked Adobe about their plans for integrating Photoshop Express with other web services and they assured us Flickr support was on the way. It’s available now and we think it adds a lot of value to both services. Now you can download your Flickr photos directly into Photoshop Express for cropping, color correction, digital effects, etc. Photos edited with Photoshop Express can be immediately re-exported/uploaded to Flickr all in one seamless step.

I just found out about Photoshop Express and had to sign right up. You can see my page at http://nengard.photoshop.com.

Sounds pretty handy – I’ll have to give it a whirl tomorrow.

Flickr Donation Program

Flickr & TechSoup have announced a great program!

The Flickr photo sharing service has teamed up with TechSoup Stock to offer premium “pro” accounts to individuals within eligible organizations. The pro accounts are available in packages of either two or five accounts. Organizations must assign these accounts to individuals over 18 years of age, and the accounts will remain assigned to those individuals even if they leave the organization. LOC & Flickr

I taught a class on Thurs on the 2.0 Office. At the end I had some extra time so I showed some fun social tools that you can find professional uses for. One of these tools was Flickr. Well, it turns out (thanks David for pointing it out) that the Library of Congress has come up with a pretty awesome way to use Flickr.

The project is beginning somewhat modestly, but we hope to learn a lot from it. Out of some 14 million prints, photographs and other visual materials at the Library of Congress, more than 3,000 photos from two of our most popular collections are being made available on our new Flickr page, to include only images for which no copyright restrictions are known to exist.

This is a great idea!! I love it!

Edit your photos in Flickr

Flickr is going to add editing capabilities using Picnik in the next few months:

Currently, you can rotate photos on Flickr, but the editing stops there. When the new tools launch, users will be able to edit photos more extensively using the Picnik Flash based tools

Tag Clustering in Flickr

I am giving a workshop on Flickr next month and I have to admit that there isn’t a conference that goes by where I don’t learn something new about Flickr (that I should have known). I’m at the NFAIS Humanities Rountable and Tim Spalding has just finished his intro to LibraryThing talk in which he showed tag clustering on Flickr – a feature introduced over 2 years ago!!! Tim used the example of the tag bow where the images are clustered based on similar tags – this is pretty darn neat and accurate (except the first row).

Camera Finder – Part 2

I said before (earlier today) that I didn’t think the Flickr Camera Finder was useful, but I’ve played with it more and have changed my mind.

I did a little browsing to find pictures taken by a particular camera. I can use this to figure out which cameras take the best pictures (for me). I have added the FujiFilm E900 to my wishlist per a recommendation from a friend (and an amazing price). I did a little looking at pictures taken with this camera and it’s a huge improvement over my current camera.

Flickr now has a Camera Finder that shows you which cameras are the most popular on Flickr. It doesn’t actually show which cameras are good – just which ones the most members on Flickr use. Not terribly useful – but still interesting.

I have just paid for my Flickr account – that’s right – up til now I just stayed within my limits as a free member, but today when I couldn’t create a new set for IL2006 photos I decided it was worth it to make the leap!
